The area is situated in Lake Kuohijärvi in Lammi. The area consists of a group of islands covering 39 hectares owned by municipalities, including the islands of Hietasalo, Kolusaari, Kaituri and Puka-luodot, as well as three beaches suitable for putting up boats. The area has about 8 kilometres of shoreline. Hietasalo is the biggest of the islands with 34 hectares. It has a versatile environment, primarily covered by pine and spruce trees. There are magnificent cliffs in Hieta-salo, particularly in the northern part of the island. In the southern part of the island there is a cliff nearly 30 metres high with a lookout spot. The eastern part of the island has an interesting marsh accessible by a causeway. There is also a hiking trail across the island from south to north. Hietasalo has four bases with fire rings. The main base is situated on the western shore of the island facing Hietasalo Gate on the mainland, featuring a parking lot, an info sign and a boat launch site. The main base also has a swimming beach, a pier, a compost toilet and a tent site. The group of small islands in Kaituri called Pukaluodot is part of an underwater esker formation going across Lake Kuohijärvi. Kaituri has a fire ring and a good sandy beach for swimming. The nature in Kaituri is lush esker forest.
Connections: boat landings on the western shore of Lake Kuohijärvi: Hietasalo Gate (0.8 km by boat), Avusranta beach (3 km by boat), and on the eastern shore: Vähä-Evo beach (3 km by boat). They all have boat launches suited for a small boat. Avusranta has facilities for boat storage; storing boats is forbidden on Hietasalo Gate beach. The island is also accessible from Pöystilä Inn, where rowboats are available for hire, tel. +358 3 633 5526. Lake Kuohijärvi is rocky in places and the rocks have not been marked, so moving on the lake by boat calls for caution. Persons moving on the lake by boat are responsible for their own safety. The boat landings have parking areas and info signs with maps; Hietasalo Gate beach also has a spring and a waste disposal area.
The area is owned by Hämeenlinna, Riihimäki, Hattula, Janakkala, Kalvola, Hauho, Lammi, Renko, Tuulos and Luopioinen.
